Witchcraft trials are ended Gov. William Phips.
January 3, 1693
Phips takes the action after returning from Maine to find that his wife is among those charged. He suspends the Court of Oyer and Terminer, frees the approximately 150 persons still imprisoned, and stays all further executions. The General Court authorizes reparations for the families of those wrongfully accused and executed in 1711.
